Saliva Tests for Diagnosis of Viral Diseases

Abstract
Saliva can be used as a specimen for the diagnosis of AIDS, viral hepatitis, and other viral diseases. Further development is required to increase the sensitivity of saliva tests for diagnosis of viral diseases and to provide better confirmatory procedures for them. In addition, more reliable and foolproof salivary collection devices are needed, together with simple checks of the immunoglobulin content of the specimens collected by them.
Salivary diagnostic technology is still in its infancy, but the future use of oral fluid-based testing will likely increase because of the following advantages of this technology.

1. Less painful and stressful than venipuncture
2. Eliminates risk of needlestick accidents
3. Better patient acceptance
4. More cost-efficient
5. More convenient
